What SeaAj reads for you

The way back

The wind you would meet coming home, and where it would push you.

Wind chop

The size of short waves the wind raises.

Calm window

The hours when the sea is calmest, or that there is no good window.

Drift

How far and where the wind would carry you if you stopped paddling.

When to stay out

  • Wind blowing away from the shore: it is easy to go out and very hard to come back.
  • Chop over about half a metre, which tips boards and tires you.
  • Cold water without a suit, and going far from the coast.

Before you go

  • Always wear a life jacket or buoyancy aid, and a leash on a paddle board.
  • Paddle into the wind first, so the way home is with it.
  • Stay close to the shore and within what you can paddle back from.
  • Carry a phone in a waterproof case, and tell someone your plan.
  • Do not go when the app says the sea is dangerous.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to paddle?

In the calm window of the day, which is usually early. SeaAj shows the hours when wind and chop are lowest.

Why does the wind direction matter so much?

Because a wind that helps you out pushes you away from the shore and makes the way back hard. SeaAj shows the wind you would meet on the return.

Other activities

These are estimates, not guarantees. Always look at the sea yourself before going out, do not go alone and wear a life jacket.
