What SeaAj reads for you
Swell
Height and the direction it comes from.
Period and power
How long between waves and the energy in them.
Wind on the waves
Light wind keeps waves clean; strong wind blows them out unless it blows from the land.
Board for today
A suggested type of board for the wave size.
Does the swell reach your beach?
If the beach's direction is known, the app says whether the swell reaches it or is blocked; if not, it rates the waves alone and says so.
When to stay out
- Big swell you are not used to, or waves breaking over rocks or a shallow bottom.
- Rip currents and crowded breaks if you are a beginner.
- Surfing alone, far out, in cold water without a suit.
Before you go
- Wear a leash and know how to fall safely.
- Check where others are and keep clear of swimmers.
- Know the beach: where it breaks, where the rips are and where you get out.
- Do not paddle out when the sea is marked dangerous.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good surfing day?
A swell that reaches the beach, a long enough period, and light wind or wind from the land. SeaAj reads all three for your spot.
Why does SeaAj say the swell does not reach my beach?
Because the swell comes from the side or behind, so little of it gets to a beach that faces another way. The beach's direction is taken from the map.
